Ahnaf Akil — IT Support Technician in Troy, Michigan
A. Akil Troy, MI · 2026

I'm an IT Support Technician in Troy, Michigan. By day I keep enterprise systems running for real users with real problems. By night I'm learning to build for the web — and using that work as a launching pad toward a career in software engineering.

Where I am right now

IT Support is my current role and my real-world classroom. Years of resolving tickets, untangling Active Directory, and walking people through Microsoft 365 have taught me how software actually behaves under pressure. It's been steady, useful work — and the foundation for everything else I'm doing.

But the part of the work I've always loved most is the moment when a small script, a smart automation, or a thoughtful tool replaces a recurring problem. That feeling is what made me want to build software, not just support it.

What I'm learning

Right now I'm focused on the web — HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and the patterns that make modern sites feel polished. The portfolio you're reading is the proof of work: built from scratch in vanilla code, designed deliberately, and shipped publicly so I can be honest about my pace.

I'm not chasing frameworks before fundamentals. I want to actually understand what I'm writing — so the next time I sit down with React or a backend framework, I'm building on a foundation, not a copy-paste.

Where I'm going

The long-term plan is software engineering. I'm working toward it deliberately: steady job, steady learning, steady projects. I'd rather build something small, real, and finished every couple of months than burn out chasing a tutorial maze.

I'm writing about the path on the blog — what I'm learning, what's confusing me, and what carries over from the IT side. If you're walking a similar road, I'd love to hear from you.

Outside of work

Travel (the kind that involves a passport stamp), thoughtful product design, and any tool that quietly does a tedious job for you. Also: long walks while debugging something in my head that I'll pretend I solved at the keyboard.
